Q&A with Domain Realty’s Adam Wavrunek: Why is the West Loop such a hot area?

838 W. Adams

Q: Why is the West Loop so hot right now?

A: The West Loop is hot for many reasons:

1. Restaurants/bars — It seems that there is a new bar or restaurant popping up on Randolph Street every week. It is one of the hottest locations for new, hip restaurants and bars in the city. Residents of the neighborhood can literally eat dinner at a different place every day for a month and still not hit all of them. And they’re pretty much all within walking distance too.

2. Location — This is a very conveniently located neighborhood. Commuters have the green/pink line at Morgan and Lake as well as I-90/94 at Madison Street. You can also walk to the Loop and River North or to Union Station and Ogilvie Station easily.

3. Neighborhood — Walking around this area feels like a real neighborhood. People are out in the various parks or walking their dog. It is pretty quiet along the side streets and not as congested as other areas downtown.

Q: What type of housing seems to be readily available in the West Loop? What is particularly popular in the market?

A: There are some great townhomes and even some single-family homes, but the neighborhood is dominated by condos. There are newer buildings that have been built in the last 5-10 years, as well as some great converted loft buildings — each with their own unique appeal.
